How we do it

We start with a scaled layout of each wall so panels are evenly sized and end cleanly at corners, casings and outlets. Rails and stiles are fastened to framing or a solid backer, joints are glued, and the cap and base are integrated with the existing baseboard and casing. The finished paneling is filled and caulked for paint.

How high should wainscoting be?

Traditional wainscoting sits at about one third of the wall height, around 32 to 36 inches with an 8-foot ceiling. Taller paneling at two thirds of the wall is common in dining rooms and entries. Board and batten is often run higher still.

What is the difference between board and batten and shiplap?

Board and batten uses vertical strips (battens) applied over a flat surface to form a grid or a series of tall panels. Shiplap is made of horizontal or vertical boards that overlap or butt with a small reveal between them.

Can paneling be installed over existing drywall?

Yes, in most cases. Battens and frames are fastened through the drywall into studs or blocking. Textured walls may need a smooth backer panel first so the flat areas look right once painted.

Is wainscoting a good idea in a bathroom or mudroom?

Yes, with the right material. In rooms that see moisture we use PVC or moisture-resistant products and a paint finish that can be wiped down.
