A door that rubs, drifts open or will not latch is almost always an installation problem, not a door problem. Hanging a door well means getting the frame plumb, the gaps even and the hardware aligned, in an opening that is rarely square.

We install interior doors one at a time or throughout a house: bedroom and bathroom doors, closet doors, French doors and pocket doors, with new casing to finish the opening.

How we do it

We check the rough opening for plumb, level and square, then set the frame with shims at the hinges and the latch so it stays put. Gaps are kept even around the door, the latch is set to catch without forcing, and the casing is installed and caulked. For slab doors, hinges and hardware are mortised to match the existing frame.

Prehung or slab door: which do I need?

A prehung door comes mounted in its own frame and is the right choice when the old frame is damaged or out of square, or in new openings. A slab is just the door, fitted to your existing frame, and works well when the frame is sound and you want to keep the existing trim.

Why are solid-core doors worth it?

Solid-core doors are heavier, block more sound and feel more substantial than hollow-core doors. They are a popular upgrade for bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices.

Can you replace doors without replacing the trim?

Yes, when the frames are in good condition. A new slab is cut and mortised to fit the existing frame, so the casing stays in place.

How long does it take to install an interior door?

A prehung door in a ready opening typically takes a couple of hours including casing. Fitting a slab to an old frame takes longer because the hinges and latch have to be matched by hand.
