How we do it

Old trim is removed carefully so the walls are not damaged. New baseboard is scribed to the floor where it is uneven, inside corners are coped, outside corners are mitered and glued, and long runs are joined with scarf joints over a stud. Nail holes are filled and joints are caulked so the trim is ready for paint.

Baseboard and Trim Installation Questions, Answered

Should baseboards go in before or after new flooring?

In most cases after. Installing baseboard once the floor is in gives a clean line and covers the expansion gap at the wall. If your baseboards are staying, shoe molding is added after the flooring to cover that gap.

How tall should baseboards be?

A common guideline is around 7 percent of the ceiling height: roughly 5 to 6 inches for an 8-foot ceiling, and taller for 9- and 10-foot ceilings. The casing around doors and windows should be considered too, so the trim looks balanced.

Can you match the trim I already have?

Often, yes. Many profiles are still made, and others can be reproduced by combining stock moldings. In older homes we bring a sample of the existing trim to find the closest match.

Do you paint the trim after installing it?

We leave trim filled, caulked and ready for paint. Tell us in the estimate form if you want painting included and we will quote it as part of the job.
