Do I need a permit to build a deck?

In most towns a new deck, or a rebuild of the structure, requires a building permit, and rules vary from town to town. Your local building department has the final word. We can tell you what is typically needed and provide the project details for the application.

Wood or composite decking: which is better?

Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and needs regular sealing or staining. Composite costs more, does not need staining and resists rot and splinters. Cedar sits in between and has a natural look. The right choice depends on budget and how much upkeep you want.

Can you repair my deck instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the framing is sound, worn boards, railings and stairs can be replaced without rebuilding the whole deck. If the framing or the attachment to the house is rotted or undersized, rebuilding is the safer option, and we will tell you which applies.

What time of year do you build decks?

Spring through fall is the main season. Repairs and smaller projects can often be done in milder winter weather, depending on ground conditions.
