Window Trim That Finishes the Opening

New windows are often installed with little or no interior trim, and drywall-wrapped openings leave a room looking unfinished. Proper casing frames the window, covers the gap between the window and the wall, and ties it to the doors and baseboards.

We trim out new and replacement windows and upgrade plain openings, in styles from simple flat casing to traditional casing with a stool, apron and backband.

How we do it

We measure the depth between the window frame and the finished wall and add jamb extensions where needed, so the casing sits flat. Reveals are kept consistent on all sides, the stool is notched to fit the opening, and miters are glued and fastened. The gap between window and framing is insulated before the trim goes on.

Can you add casing to windows that only have drywall returns?

Yes. Drywall-wrapped openings can be trimmed with jamb extensions and casing. It is a common upgrade in newer homes and makes a clear difference in how finished a room looks.

What is the difference between a window stool and an apron?

The stool is the horizontal piece at the bottom of the window that most people call the sill. The apron is the trim piece installed flat against the wall directly beneath it.

Should window casing match door casing?

In most homes, yes. Using the same profile and width on doors and windows keeps a house consistent. We match what you have or recommend a profile if you are changing all of it.
