Crown Molding That Looks Like It Was Always There

Crown molding finishes the line where the wall meets the ceiling, and it is one of the fastest ways to make a room feel complete. It is also unforgiving: ceilings are rarely level, walls are rarely straight, and every corner shows whether the cut was right.

We install crown in single rooms and whole houses, from a simple cove in a bedroom to built-up, multi-piece crown in a dining room or entry. Profiles are chosen to suit the ceiling height and the trim already in the house.

Crown Molding Installation: What to Expect

What is included

  • Single-piece and built-up (multi-piece) crown molding
  • Coped inside corners and tight mitered outside corners
  • Crown on cabinets, built-ins and range hoods
  • Coffered and beamed ceiling trim
  • Matching an existing profile in an older home
  • Caulked joints and filled nail holes, ready for paint

How we do it

We measure each room, check the ceiling and walls for level and plumb, and plan where the joints will fall so they land in the least visible spots. Inside corners are coped rather than simply mitered, which keeps them tight as the house moves through the seasons. Long walls are joined with scarf joints, and everything is fastened into framing.

What affects the cost

Every estimate is based on your project. The main factors are:

  • Linear footage and the number of corners
  • Ceiling height and how level the ceiling is
  • Profile size, and single-piece versus built-up crown
  • Material: primed MDF or poplar for paint, hardwood for stain
  • Whether painting is part of the job

Crown Molding Installation Questions, Answered

What size crown molding should I use?

It depends mostly on ceiling height. Standard 8-foot ceilings usually suit a crown between 3.5 and 5 inches. Taller ceilings can carry a larger profile or a built-up crown made of several pieces. We bring samples and recommend a size for each room.

Can you install crown molding on uneven ceilings?

Yes. Most ceilings are out of level to some degree. We find the low and high points first, then set the crown to a consistent line and close small gaps with caulk so the result reads as straight.

MDF or solid wood crown molding?

For painted crown, primed MDF and finger-jointed poplar are both good choices and cost less than clear hardwood. For stained crown, or in rooms with a lot of moisture, solid wood is the better option.

How long does crown molding installation take?

A single room is usually done in a day. A whole floor or a whole house takes several days, depending on the number of rooms, the ceiling height and the profile.
